I had some big ideas for this blog when I first set it up in 2013. At the time I was tasked with writing editorial about games by Cranberry Publishing where I was tasked with producing five 300 word-plus articles a-day for GamerZines.com and in between that time I was producing editorial and managing freelance staff for two relatively popular digital magazines PCGZine and MMOZine. Both of which had tens of thousands of regular engaged readers per month.

The Importance of Gamer Guilt
“Fucking first lap heroes!” a voice screams through my headphones.
“Race ruined already, brilliant” another sarcastically concedes.
Both of those unhappy chappies are talking about me, or more directly what I’ve done during the first lap of a Skip Barber race at Laguna Seca in the subscription-only sim, iRacing.
Even though the interaction between car and track is entirely simulated with pixels, models and algorithms replacing the nuts and bolts of rubber meeting road, the feelings of guilt are immediately real as I misjudge the entry to Laguna Seca’s beloved corkscrew section resulting in me clipping and spinning a fellow human driver ninety degrees, which in turn tangles us together creating an unavoidable obstacle for a trio of drivers behind.
The Un-played Shelf
All of us have games that sit on our shelf, just waiting to be played. But despite the initial good intentions we felt when we initially purchased them, they still just sit there, waiting to be played. Why the hell do we do it, why don’t we just wait until we are ready for a new game instead of buying all the good ones in the vain hope theat we will play them, eventually. But we don’t and then they are just unused, not fulfilling there potential like that out of date condom that has resided in your wallet for years.
But now is the time to name and shame, what is the best game you own but have never played? Here is a few of mine, and the list is ever growing:
Armed and Dangerous
Eternal Darkness
Valkyria Chronicles
Resistance 2
Terms or phrases that should never be in reviews.
Lets play a game – if you spot any of these terms or phrases in your favourite websites reviews you must immediately stop reading:
‘For fans of the genre’
‘Visceral’
‘Gameplay’
‘Action packed’
‘Duck and cover’
‘Life simulator’
‘Critic’s darling’
‘Broken’
